Maharashtra's self-respect compromised when Shiv Sena aligned with Congress in 2019: BJP

Mumbai, Nov 3 (UNI) Maharashtra's self-respect was compromised when the Shiv Sena aligned itself with the Congress in 2019, BJP Maharashtra unit chief spokesperson Navnath Ban alleged on Tuesday.
Addressing a press conference at the BJP state headquarters, Ban criticised Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut for participating in a Congress-led rally in Delhi on Monday, claiming that he was not even given an opportunity to address the gathering.
He also alleged that while Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray frequently praised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, the latter did not even acknowledge Thackeray by name.
Ban accused Raut and the Uddhav Thackeray-led faction of abandoning the ideology of Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray and Hindutva for political power. He alleged that Raut had compromised the party's political legacy for the Chief Minister's post and effectively surrendered his faction to the Congress.
Claiming that the Uddhav Thackeray-led faction would eventually merge with the Congress, Ban said Raut should refrain from criticising Prime Minister Narendra Modi, union Home Minister Amit Shah, the Shiv Sena led by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and the NCP faction led by Ajit Pawar.
Ban further alleged that Rahul Gandhi and Raut were working together against democratic institutions and accused them of avoiding parliamentary discussions on issues raised by the Opposition. Referring to Shah's invitation for a discussion in Parliament, he said the Opposition leaders should participate in the debate and seek clarification on their concerns.
He also rejected allegations of an undeclared Emergency in the country, saying that people were free to organise protests, rallies and political movements. Referring to the Emergency imposed by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, Ban said the Jana Sangh had actively opposed it.
Challenging the Uddhav Thackeray-led faction to contest all seats in the forthcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, Ban said political change should be pursued through constitutional means and electoral processes rather than through street protests aimed at creating instability.
He warned against attempts to create situations similar to those in Bangladesh and Nepal, asserting that political change in India must take place within the framework of the Constitution. UNI SP AAB
