Maha: Eminent Islamic scholar Maulana Ghulam Mohammad Vastanvi passes away

Mumbai, May 4 (UNI) Maulana Ghulam Mohammad Vastanvi, an eminent Islamic scholar, visionary educationist and founder-rector of Jamia Islamia Ishaatul Uloom, Akkalkuwa, passed away on Sunday at age of 75.
His demise marks the end of a significant chapter in contemporary Islamic education and is being widely mourned across the country.
Maulana Vastanvi had been ailing for nearly a year. In recent weeks, his health deteriorated, and he was admitted to a private hospital in Aurangabad, where his son is a practising doctor.
After a period of hospitalisation, he was shifted back to his residence in Akkalkuwa, Nandurbar district, where he breathed his last earlier this afternoon.
His is survied by two sons and five daughters.
Funeral prayers are scheduled to be held tonight in Akkalkuwa, with community members and students expected to attend in large numbers.
Born on June one, 1950 in Kosadi, Surat district of Gujarat, Maulana Vastanvi’s family relocated to the village of Vastan in the early 1950s, from which he derived his surname. He began his religious education at Madrasa Quwat-ul-Islam in Kosadi, memorising the Quran at a young age. He continued his studies at Madrasa Shams-ul-Uloom in Baroda and then at Madrasa Falah-e-Darain in Turkesar, Gujarat, where he studied under renowned scholars for eight years.
He later specialised in Hadith at Mazahir Uloom, Saharanpur, under the guidance of the eminent Maulana Muhammad Younus Jaunpuri. In addition to his religious scholarship, Maulana Vastanvi also held an MBA degree, reflecting his commitment to integrating modern education with traditional Islamic learning.
In 1979, Maulana Vastanvi founded Jamia Islamia Ishaatul Uloom in Akkalkuwa, which grew to become a leading institution for Islamic and modern education in India. Under his leadership, the institution established the country’s first minority-run medical college recognized by the Medical Council of India, setting a precedent for educational reform in the community.
Maulana Vastanvi briefly served as the Vice-Chancellor (Mohtamim) of Darul Uloom Deoband in 2011, where he advocated for educational modernisation and broader community engagement. He was also a respected member of the Shura (governing council) of Darul Uloom Deoband.
Known for his humility, deep spirituality, and dedication to social welfare, Maulana Vastanvi was a disciple of Maulana Muhammad Zakariya Kandhlawi and later Syed Siddiq Ahmad Bandwi and Maulana Muhammad Younus Jaunpuri. His spiritual and educational legacy has inspired thousands of students and scholars across India and beyond.
Community leaders, scholars and alumni have expressed profound grief at his passing, describing it as an irreparable loss to the Muslim Ummah. His pioneering efforts in education, healthcare and community development have left an indelible mark on Indian society.
