Maha: Fadnavis appeals to citizens to re-register on electoral rolls as per extended SIR deadline

Mumbai, Oct 13 (UNI) Maharashtra Chief Minister tweeted an appeal on his X account today, appealing to voters to re-register their names on the electoral roll as per the deadline which has been extended till October 26.
Fadnavis has stated that citizens whose names have been excluded from the draft voter list can use the opportunity to get themselves included in the voters’ list.
"If there is any mistake in the names, or if there is a change in spelling, or if there is a correction, such citizens will benefit greatly from this extension," he stated.
"All citizens can now register objections till October 26 and objections can be registered through the office of the concerned election officer as well as online," Fadnavis tweeted.
“If your name is omitted, if there is a mistake in the entry, to include your name, to correct it or to raise an objection as required, file the relevant application before October 26, 2026. This process is being implemented to ensure that the electoral roll remains accurate and up-to-date and to ensure the right of every eligible citizen to vote. Therefore, eligible citizens should take advantage of this extension,” according to the Maharashtra Chief Minister’s statement posted on his X account.
Fadnavis also stated that claims and objections will be settled by November 10 and the final voters’ list will be published on November 16.
The Maharashtra Chief Minister’s statement came a couple of days after the Election Commission itself announced a few days ago that it has extended the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) deadline until October 26, after severe criticism of the SIR process as well as poor response from young first-time voters, and others whose names were deleted from the draft electoral rolls.
So far, the Election Commision has received only 8,33,000 applications and it hopes to get more applications during the 14-day extension of the SIR process.
As part of the SIR process, the Election Commission deleted 20.70 million electors from the rolls on August 30, when the first phase of the exercise was completed, and the draft roll was published.
Of these, 7.68 million were recorded as permanently shifted, while 7.55 million were marked absent from their registered addresses, while 3.48 million were reported dead, 1.76 million were identified as duplicate entries, and 2,23,000 reportedly refused to participate in the enumeration process.
The Election Commission had expected many of the 15.23 million electors deleted for being absent or permanently shifted to re-enroll by submitting Form 6.
The Election Commission had also anticipated a good response from 3.6 million first-time voters who became eligible to register for the first time as voters, after October 2024, but instead, it got a poor response from first-time voters.
