Maha: FDA seizes gutka worth Rs 12.10 lakh in Nagpur, 3 arrested; suspends licences of 14 eateries including 7 in Mumbai

Mumbai, Sep 17 (UNI) In a statewide festive-season crackdown, the Food and Drug Administration, Maharashtra seized milk and dairy products worth Rs 7.38 lakh and gutka worth Rs 12.10 lakh in Nagpur, arresting three persons, while suspending licences of 14 hotels and restaurants including seven in Mumbai.
According to a press note issued by FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe, a total of 27 hotels, restaurants and dhabas were inspected on September 16 across the state. Licences of 14 establishments were suspended forthwith, while improvement notices were issued to 13 others.
In Konkan division, FDA teams seized large quantities of suspicious khoya and mawa being transported in unhygienic conditions without temperature control at Kashimira, Mira Road and Charoti Toll Naka in Thane and Palghar. The seizure included 1,312 kg of loose khoya and sweet mawa valued at Rs 6.34 lakh from two vehicles bearing nos. AR 20B 8986 and AR-06-C-7795, and 174 kg sweet mawa worth Rs 48,720 from vehicle AR 01 Q 0822. The stock was seized for violation of Sections 23, 26 and 27 of Food Safety and Standards Act.
In Pune division, 126 kg sweets worth Rs 63,000 were seized from Vishnu Sweets and Dairy, Karad and 197 kg khoya and rabri worth Rs 40,430 from Amawa Milk, Kolhapur.
In a major action against prohibited gutka, pan masala and scented tobacco in Nagpur division, FDA inspected three establishments, seizing banned stock worth Rs 4.10 lakh along with two vehicles worth Rs 8 lakh. First Information Reports have been registered and three persons arrested.
Taking serious note of consumer complaints under "Safe Food Safe Maharashtra" campaign, FDA suspended the licence of iconic Olympia Coffee House, Colaba with immediate effect under Section 32(3) of FSS Act.
The inspection revealed gross violations including urinal located inside food storage area, food handled directly on floor, use of unclean water, cockroach and fly infestation, meat blood residues inside refrigerator, failure to segregate raw vegetarian and non-veg food and use of damaged wooden chopping boards. Out of 35 handlers, 34 had not undergone food safety training.
Six other establishments in Mumbai whose licences were suspended are Blink Commerce Pvt Ltd, Chembur, Vishwas Sweets And Snacks, Ghatkopar West, A-1 General and Dry Fruits, Ghatkopar West, Nair Hospital Canteen, Mumbai Central, Milan Punjab, Worli and Sadguru Sweets, Malad East.
In Pune division, licences of Hotel New Nityanand and Ice Cream, Ambegaon, Manas Family Restaurant, Wai, R P Hospitalities (Rangala Punjab), Pashan and Manisha Dosa Centre, Pune were suspended. In Nagpur, Superbaker (EMRLD Coffee Shop), Dharampeth and Surahi Restaurant and Bar, Nandanvan were suspended, while P4B Technologies Service Pvt Ltd canteen in Kharghar, Raigad was also suspended.
FDA also seized other suspicious food stock worth Rs 1.72 lakh in Pune division including glucose powder, namkeen, raisins, laddoos, paneer, ghee and boondi. In Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, 1,221 kg sweets worth Rs 1.92 lakh were seized from unlicensed trader Sagar Somesh Limbore. Similar action was taken at Ahilyanagar and Nashik Road where jaggery and ghee worth Rs 75,000 were seized.
