Maha: FIR against illegal horse-drawn carriage in Mumbai

Mumbai, Jun 2 (UNI) An FIR (first information report) was registered against an illegal horse carriage operator following a complaint by PETA India, officials said here on Monday.
The incident occurred on Babulnath’s Seaface Junction in the Gamdevi area of south Mumbai, where a horse-drawn carriage was spotted despite the Bombay High Court's 2015 ban on such vehicles.
The FIR was filed at Gamdevi police station under Sections 3 and 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, and Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. The complaint was based on a video by a vigilant citizen Urvi Shah, a resident of Malabar Hill, who witnessed a Victoria carriage transporting people in the Gamdevi area. She immediately recorded a video of the incident and reported it to Saloni Sakaria (32), the Mumbai coordinator for PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals).
Following the complaint, Ms Sakaria alleged that the horse was subjected to cruelty and forced to carry an excessive load. She filed a formal complaint against the carriage driver and owner at the Gamdevi Police Station.
On Sunday, the Gamdevi Police recorded Ms Sakaria's detailed statement and subsequently registered a case against the carriage operator.
The investigation into incident is going on.
