Maha’s 'Ladki Bahin' scheme faces major flak: Supriya Sule demands white paper, probe into misallocation

Mumbai, Sep 17 (UNI) In a startling revelation exposing deep administrative mismanagement, Right to Information (RTI) data has revealed that the Maharashtra government is planning a one-time waiver for over Rs 5,000 crore distributed to ineligible beneficiaries under the flagship ‘Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana’.
Spearheading the political backlash, Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction) MP Supriya Sule has strongly demanded a transparent White Paper and an impartial, thorough probe into the misallocation, questioning "how state machinery failed to screen applicants".
Launched ahead of the state Assembly elections, the ambitious women’s welfare scheme has disbursed a staggering Rs 78,700 crore since its inception in July 2024 through July 2026. However, subsequent e-KYC verifications and scrutiny exposed massive loopholes: over 81.44 million (81.44 lakh) names were eventually scrubbed from the rolls.
The audit uncovered that benefits were pocketed by 14,000 men posing as women, families of government employees (4.42 lakh), and individuals with annual incomes exceeding the Rs 2.5 lakh threshold (16 lakh).
Rather than recovering the funds from over 20 lakh ineligible recipients who drew money for nearly 17 months, the state is reportedly moving to write off the total loss. Rs 78,700 crore distributed between July 2024 and July 2026.
Peak enrolment hit Rs 2.46 crore in December 2024, which plummeted to Rs 1.64 crore by July 2026 following rigorous verification.While official records show 82 lakh names trimmed, cabinet ministers have cited a reduction of 92 lakh, leaving a controversial 10-lakh gap in official data reporting.
Weighing in on the data, Ms Sule slammed the Mahayuti government via social media, questioning "why advanced digital and income-tax database networks failed to filter out illegal applicants initially."
"This is taxpayers' hard-earned money. Why should administrative negligence during preliminary verification be brushed under the carpet at the public's expense? We demand a transparent White Paper on the scheme and a thorough, impartial probe into the Rs 5,000 crore misallocation," she stated.
