Maha: Shiv Sena (UBT), environmental groups call 'bandh' in Karjat tomorrow against proposed Torrent power project

Kolhapur, Raigad, Nov 1 (UNI) Shiv Sena (UBT) and environmental groups called for a shutdown (bandh) in Karjat on Monday, November 2, to protest against the large-scale felling of trees for Gujarat-based Torrent Power's proposed 3,000 MW pumped-storage hydroelectric project in Saidongar and Kotwal Khalati areas of Raigad district.
Shiv Sena (UBT) workers, alongside local villagers, environmental activists (including actor Sayaji Shinde), and political figures, have organized the Karjat taluka-wide strike to protest the ecological damage in the Western Ghats.
Meanwhile, amid intense public backlash, political visits (including MNS chief Raj Thackeray, young Sena UBT leader Aaditya Thackeray, and Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange-Patil), the Maharashtra Forest department paused the tree-cutting plan.
On the other hand, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and the Torrent company defended the benefits of the proposed project and noted compensatory afforestation plans, while opposition leaders raised questions over impact of the project on environment, transparency, and power distribution planned for the region.
