Maha: SSS stages sit-in in Krishna riverbed demanding to release water from Koyana dam

Sangli, Oct 24 (UNI) Angered by the Maharashtra government's anti-farmer policy, Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana (SSS) national president and former MP Raju Shetty today launched a 'sit-in' agitation in totally dried-up Krishna river basin along with party workers and farmers in Pakus of the district, to protest against the state Irrigation department's decision to suspend release of water from Koyana dam in Krishna river basin, and warned the state government that they will not move from the riverbed until farmers get their rightful water.
"Even though there is a huge 89 TMC of live water stock in the Koyna dam, the state government is reluctant to release water into the Krishna and Koyna river basins," he said while starting aggressive sit-in protest right in the dried-up Krishna river basin in Palus of Bhilwadi taluka.
Speaking from the protest site, Shetty made serious allegations against the government, saying that this severe water shortage has been deliberately created to demoralize sugarcane farmers by drying their sugarcane in the fields and to start sugar factories early.
"The Krishna basin is a water balance basin, there is no reason for shortage of water there," he asserted while directly targeting Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who has ordered the Irrigation eepartment not to release water, which is why the villages along the banks of the river are suffering without water. He warned that this protest will intensity if the goverment failed to release the water into Krishna riverbed immediately.
Meanwhile, the Superintendent Engineer of the Irrigation department clarified that "the government has not yet convened a meeting of the Canal Advisory Committee. Therefore, we have no power to plan water at the local level. All decisions pertaining to water are being taken directly from the ministry level."
