Maha: Student dies by suicide after being stopped from exam for using ChatGPT

Mumbai, Sep 19 (UNI) A second-year student died by suicide on Friday night after he was reportedly found using ChatGPT on his mobile phone at the time of an examination, according to information emerging from the institution.
The student has reportedly uploaded the examination question paper to ChatGPT in an attempt to obtain answers.
After he was found using the AI tool during the examination, the institution prevented him from continuing with the test. However, no disciplinary action was initiated against him following the incident.
Instead, the student was reportedly spoken to by his instructor and head of department, and was also counselled. He was allegedly assured that the incident would not have any adverse impact on his academic career.
Following the student's death, students protesting on the campus have alleged that faculty members subjected students to unnecessary pressure and intimidation, and demanded the resignation of institute director Professor Shirish B. Kedare as well as sought a transparent inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Kedare has accepted moral responsibility for the incident. Speaking on the matter, he said he accepted the moral responsibility for the entire episode and that the institution is taking full responsibility in the matter.
However, when asked about the demand for his resignation, Kedare did not give a direct response.
The incident has triggered concern among students and calls for a detailed and transparent inquiry into the circumstances that preceded the student's death.
