Pune’s heritage and cultural assets need greater focus to develop tourism: Official

Pune, Sep 19 ( UNI) Pune’s rich heritage and cultural assets need to be given greater attention to strengthen the city’s position as a tourism destination, Deputy Director of the Pune Regional Office of the Directorate of Tourism Bharat Langhi said here on Saturday.
Speaking at a tourism seminar organised jointly by the Pune Festival and Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation, Langhi said effective implementation of tourism policies and development of infrastructure could help expand tourism in Pune and its surrounding areas.
Pune is known as a centre for education, automobiles, IT and healthcare. "
Its ancient and historical heritage and cultural wealth also offer significant tourism potential,” Langhi said.
He said infrastructure, quality accommodation, transportation and sanitation were among the key requirements for developing tourism. He also pointed to the potential for heritage, adventure, health, sports, archaeological, fort, cave, dam, agricultural and rural tourism in and around Pune.
Langhi said the Junnar region could be developed around its Satavahana-era heritage and Buddhist caves. He also referred to government schemes available for tourism projects, women entrepreneurs and startups.
Tourism industry representative Nilesh Bhansali stressed the need for coordination between the government and private sector for tourism development. He said infrastructure, transportation and safety required sustained government participation.
Wellness tourism expert Dr Santosh Suryawanshi spoke about the scope for wellness tourism through natural farming, Ayurveda-based lifestyles and cow shelters.
He also highlighted the need for greater academic opportunities in agricultural and rural tourism.
Manoj Hadawale, founder and director of Parashar Agri and Village Tourism, said better infrastructure, cleanliness, safety and accurate information in accessible languages were important to attract international tourists.
The seminar also featured the participation of representatives from the tourism and travel sector.
An award was presented to Sameer Waghole of Anandmala Agro Tourism Centre in Darumbre village of Maval taluka for his work in the agricultural tourism sector.
Pune Festival president Krishnakumar Goel and general secretary and cultural programmes chief coordinator Dr Satish Desai felicitated the speakers at the event.
