Mahanadi water dispute between Odisha, Chhattisgarh likely to be resolved soon: CM Majhi

Bhubaneswar, Oct 1 (UNI) Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Thursday said the long-pending Mahanadi water dispute between Odisha and Chhattisgarh is moving towards a resolution and expressed hope that a final framework would be announced soon, keeping the interests of both states in view.
Majhi made the statement after attending a high-level meeting on the dispute at Kartavya Bhawan in New Delhi, chaired by union Home Minister Amit Shah and attended by union Jal Shakti Minister C. R. Patil and Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai.
Talking to the media after the meeting, Majhi said the discussions were held in a cordial and positive atmosphere and that both sides were gradually moving closer to a solution.
"We are gradually moving closer to a resolution and hope that a final framework will be released very soon," he said.
The Chief Minister said a mutually acceptable solution would be worked out while safeguarding the interests of both Odisha and Chhattisgarh.
He said under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a path was being opened for resolving inter-state disputes and expressed hope that a settlement of the Mahanadi issue could serve as a "model dispute resolution" mechanism for other states.
Describing the Mahanadi as the lifeline and source of livelihood for crores of people in Odisha, Majhi said he placed before the meeting several issues concerning the state, including irrigation, flood control, hydropower generation, drinking water supply and environmental concerns.
He stressed the need to ensure that Odisha receives an adequate share of Mahanadi water.
Majhi said the process of resolving the dispute had accelerated after the BJP governments came to power in both Odisha and Chhattisgarh.
He said the two Chief Ministers had held discussions on the issue during July-August 2025, followed by several rounds of meetings between the Chief Secretaries and Water Resources Secretaries of the two states.
A further meeting was held in July this year under the chairmanship of the union Jal Shakti Minister in the presence of the two Chief Ministers, he said.
Following the decisions taken at the July meeting, various issues, data and information relating to the water requirements of both states are being furnished to the Central Water Commission, Majhi said.
He said it was provisionally decided at the July meeting to work out a possible resolution within three months. Two months have since passed and there has been satisfactory progress towards finding a solution, he added.
Majhi also expressed gratitude to union Home Minister Amit Shah for personally taking up the issue and making efforts to facilitate a resolution to the long-standing Mahanadi dispute.
