Maharashtra: Kolhapur couple’s cat hoarding sparks health crackdown

Kolhapur, June 13 (UNI) A couple in Airekar Galli near Rankala Bus Stand, in Kolhapur city of Maharashtra , faced municipal action after illegally keeping over 35 cats in their residence, creating severe hygiene problems and distressing neighbours.
Following multiple complaints, the Kolhapur Municipal Corporation (KMC) health department conducted a raid on Tuesday, seizing three cats and removing two tractor-trolley loads of accumulated garbage.
The raid was triggered by reports of a foul stench and unsanitary conditions caused by the large number of cats and the resulting waste. Upon arrival, the KMC team found that more than 15 cats fled the premises. One health worker was bitten during the operation.
The couple, identified as Pradeep and Madhuri Bulbule, had been keeping the cats for an extended period, although the number had reportedly decreased recently. Despite receiving two prior warnings from the authorities to improve cleanliness, the couple failed to act, compelling the health department to intervene.
During the raid, the couple attempted to block officials from entering their home, leading to a verbal confrontation. KMC veterinary officer Dr. Vijay Patil described the scene, stating, “The house was so foul-smelling that all officials had to wear masks while removing the garbage and waste, which filled two tractor trolleys.” UNI AAA SSP
