Maharashtra records 53 new COVID cases; Active tally reaches 340

Mumbai, June 20 (UNI) Maharashtra reported 53 new COVID-19 infections, pushing the state's active caseload to 340 amid sustained viral transmission in urban centers.
The cumulative tally for 2025 now stands at 2,281 cases since January 1, with no fatalities recorded in the latest 24-hour period.
Pune emerged as the current hotspot with 18 new cases, followed by Mumbai (11), Nagpur (8), Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar (6), and Thane (4). Kolhapur registered 2 infections, while Nashik, Satara, Chandrapur, and Gadchiroli reported one case each.
Health department data reveals Mumbai remains the epicenter with 923 total cases this year – 435 detected in May alone and 482 already reported in June. Statewide testing efforts continue with 24,635 samples processed to date, yielding a recovery rate of 83.69% as 1,909 patients have overcome the infection.
Officials noted all 32 COVID-related fatalities in 2025 occurred among patients with significant comorbidities including diabetes, cardiovascular conditions, cancer, respiratory illnesses, or stroke.
"Most victims presented only mild COVID symptoms, with pre-existing health complications being the primary concern," a health official stated. Epidemiologists continue monitoring the trend as testing protocols remain active across the state.
