Majority of CCTV cameras at Chorbagan pandal were non-functional: Kolkata Police

Kolkata, Oct 27 (UNI) The absence of footage from two of the three CCTV cameras installed at the exit gate of Kolkata's ill-fated Chorbagan Durga Puja pandal has hampered the police investigation, with a source claiming that most of the cameras installed at the marquee had never been activated.
“Of the three CCTV cameras installed at the exit gate of the puja pandal in Chorbagan, two were non-functional. These two cameras had never been switched on. The police have managed to retrieve footage from only one of them,” the source said, adding that the lack of footage from the other two cameras had inconvenienced investigators.
According to the source, the stampede at the Chorbagan Sarbojanin pandal on October 17, which claimed 19 lives, lasted for two to three minutes.
Police are now conducting a forensic analysis by reviewing footage from four to five CCTV cameras simultaneously to establish the timing and sequence of events.
“Of the 30 CCTV cameras installed at the pandal, 17 were merely for show; they had never been activated,” the source said.
The police have seized two digital video recorders (DVRs) from the pandal — one meant to store footage from 14 cameras and the other from 16. Footage from 13 cameras has been recovered from one of the DVRs.
Meanwhile, teams from the city police headquarters at Lalbazar have been sent to Chakdaha in Nadia district and to parts of South 24 Parganas district. Police are also speaking to the family members of those who died after visiting the pandal.
The police have already interviewed 25 people who were injured in the incident.
