Malhotra attacks Opposition agitation against EC, says SC hearing should have prompted its suspension

New Delhi, Oct 5 (UNI) Delhi BJP president Harsh Malhotra on Monday criticised the ongoing agitation against the Election Commission, alleging that the political forces leading the protests have no faith in either the Constitution or the judiciary as they have not suspended the stir despite the Supreme Court taking up the matter.
His remarks came after the Supreme Court declined to pass an interim order seeking the suspension of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, while issuing notices to the Centre, the Election Commission and other respondents on allegations concerning unilateral decision-making in the poll panel. Malhotra said the Supreme Court's refusal to grant immediate relief against the CEC showed that the matter was not "one-sided".
"The Hon'ble Supreme Court's refusal to pass an interim order removing the Chief Election Commissioner shows that this is not a one-sided matter," he said. He alleged that the continuation of the agitation despite the Supreme Court taking up the matter demonstrated that several Opposition parties had neither faith in the Election Commission nor the judiciary.
The BJP leader said that if the protagonists of the agitation had faith in the Constitution and the judiciary, the Communist leadership of the protest should have suspended it once the Supreme Court commenced hearing the matter. "Had they any faith in the Constitution or the judiciary, the Communist leadership of this agitation should have suspended it as soon as the hearing commenced in the Hon'ble Supreme Court," Malhotra said.
The Supreme Court on Monday sought responses from the Centre and the Election Commission on allegations that certain decisions relating to the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls were taken without the concurrence of the other two Election Commissioners. The court, however, declined to pass an interim order suspending Kumar at this stage, saying it would first examine the responses and relevant records.
Malhotra also alleged that the Opposition was seeking to prolong the agitation with an eye on the Assembly elections due in five states in early 2027.
"The defeated and frustrated Opposition parties want to prolong this agitation so that, under its cover, they can influence the elections to be held in five states in early 2027," he said. The allegations come amid protests by Opposition parties and other groups demanding action against the Election Commission and the CEC over issues surrounding electoral-roll revision.
The Election Commission has denied allegations of wrongdoing and maintained that the revision exercise is aimed at ensuring the integrity of electoral rolls. UNI APS CDS
