Manipur government begins capacity building training for weavers, artisans

Imphal, June 25 (UNI) Directorate of Handloom and Textiles under the Department of Textiles Commerce and Industry has launched SAMARTH Scheme of the Ministry of Textiles, Govt. of India for capacity building of Weavers and Artisans in Manipur State.
The Scheme was launched by Anurag Bajpai, Additional Chief Secretary (Textiles, Commerce & Industry) in an event organised by Directorate at Lamboikhongangkhong, Imphal.
Speaking on the occasion, the Additional Chief Secretary envisaged the importance of implementing government schemes in improving the technology, designing skills, usage of natural dyes and better access to larger markets.
He also mentioned the need for formation of Producer Groups and the opportunities available under the UNNATI Scheme for developing an enterprise for such groups.
He conveyed that the Weavers and Artisans are facing challenges for transportation cost, for which there is an opportunity to avail benefit of subsidy under RAMP Scheme of Govt. of India. It will reduce the burden on the Weavers and Artisans on one hand, and make their product cost- competitive on the other hand.
Additional Chief Secretary further informed that the Department is also working on a project for the development of a Textile Park in the State in a time-bound manner in order to convert this unorganised sector into organised sector.

Director, Handloom and Textiles, E. Jiten Singh elaborated on the components of the SAMARTH Scheme, the benefits available for Weavers and Artisans, trades covered and proposed targets during the current year.
Initially four important trades namely, Apparel, Handloom Weaving, Hand Dyeing, and Kouna Craft at the Design Extension Centre, Porompat, and the Apparel & Garment Making Centre at Lamboikhongangkhong will be taken up.
For this, applications have been received for the four trades. The Selection Committee has finalized the Trainers and Assistant Trainers.
The training of the first batch of 25 participants commenced from today in Sewing machine operation for 300 hours (50 working days).
On the side-lines of the launching of SAMARTH Scheme, an Exhibition on different new products developed by the joint efforts of the CDEs and Textile Designer (TDs) engaged in 35 Cluster Development Programmes implemented in all districts of Manipur were also displayed.

At present, one Mega Handloom Cluster in Imphal East and 34 Cluster Development Programmes sanctioned by the Govt. of India are under implementation.
Since April 2025, the Department has started developing new designs by bringing innovations with the help of 39 well trained CDEs and TDs. They have been assigned the task to come up with at least one new design every month.
