Mann vows to continue cash aid for women, free power; targets opposition at Sardulgarh event

Chandigarh, Oct 5 (UNI) Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Monday said his government would continue financial assistance for women, free electricity for households, daytime power for farmers and merit-based recruitment, while accusing the opposition parties of lacking a clear roadmap for the state.
Addressing a Lok Milni programme in the Sardulgarh assembly constituency, Mann said welfare measures introduced by the Aam Aadmi Party government were aimed at putting public money back into the hands of ordinary people.
“The notifications on the mobile phones of Punjab’s mothers and sisters will not stop,” Mann said, referring to payments under the Mukh Mantri Mawan-Dhiyan Satkar Yojna.
He said the government had recently transferred Rs 1,262.54 crore as an instalment to 36.87 lakh women under the scheme.
“The real meaning of governance is when a woman sitting in a village receives a message on her phone that money has been deposited in her account,” Mann said.
The chief minister also said the government's scheme providing 300 units of free electricity per month to eligible domestic consumers would continue, as would daytime power supply to farmers.
Turning to employment, Mann said the government would maintain what he described as its “No Cash, No Farmaish” approach to recruitment.
“The youth of the state should not have to carry money in their pockets or a recommendation letter in their hands to get a government job. Their qualification, ability and merit are enough,” he said.
Mann said more than 70,000 government jobs had been provided through a transparent recruitment process.
He also highlighted changes in government schools and investment in infrastructure, teacher training and learning facilities, saying students from ordinary families were now aspiring to careers ranging from medicine and engineering to the civil services and sport.
Aiming at the Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party and Shiromani Akali Dal, Mann said the parties should tell voters what alternative programme they had for women, farmers, youth, education and healthcare.
“Punjab does not need politics of slogans. The state needs politics of performance,” Mann said.
He said his government had delivered beyond its election promises and would continue its welfare and development programmes.
