Mansarovar yatra to resume via Nathu La; pilgrims to arrive in Gangtok on June 15

Gangtok, June 12 (UNI) The sacred Kailash Mansarovar yatra through the uphill of Nathu La (pass) 4310 mts high from sea level in Sikkim is set to resume with the first group of 50 pilgrims scheduled to arrive in Gangtok on June 15, official sources said on Thursday.
"This marks the revival of one of the most spiritually significant journeys for Hindu devotees, after a pause in recent years," a government communique said.
According to additional chief secretary CS Rao, tourism & civil aviation department, extensive preparations have been made to ensure the safety, comfort, and well-being of the pilgrims. Each batch of yatris will be accompanied by two designated liaison officers to assist them throughout the journey.
"After arriving in Gangtok, the pilgrims will undergo a five-day high-altitude acclimatisation programme to prepare them for the challenging terrain,” Rao said.
“Comprehensive medical facilities will be available at all locations, along with telephone and internet connectivity at the designated accommodation points.” he added.
The yatris are expected to cross into China via the Nathu La pass on June 20. The Sikkim government has proposed that Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang will flag off the first batch from the historic yatra at Nathu La, some 60 km uphill journey from this capital, as the ceremonial significance to the spiritual expedition.
The Nathu La route, known for its scenic and relatively less strenuous terrain compared to the Lipulekh Pass, had emerged as a popular alternative before the yatra was suspended. Its reopening reflects a renewed commitment to promoting spiritual and cross-border tourism while ensuring strict adherence to health and safety protocols.
