Marvel’s ‘Avengers’ not to reassemble anytime soon as Disney delays release

Los Angeles, May 23 (UNI) Marvel’s seminal heroes, the Avengers will unfortunately be assembling later than expected as Disney has delayed the next two massive instalments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ both moving to new release dates as part of a sweeping shake-up of the studio’s theatrical calendar.
‘Avengers: Doomsday’ will now land in UK cinemas on 18 December 2026, seven months after its previously announced debut of 1 May. Its follow-up, ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’, has similarly been bumped to 17 December 2027, having originally been pencilled in for 7 May, according to Variety.
The double delay was confirmed by Disney on Thursday afternoon, as part of a broader realignment that also saw several unnamed Marvel films quietly scrubbed from the schedule. A previously scheduled 13 February 2026 release has been removed entirely, while 6 November 2026 and 5 November 2027 — once marked for ‘Untitled Marvel’ projects — are now simply listed as ‘Untitled Disney’ films.
That leaves just two MCU titles officially on the docket for 2026: ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and Sony’s ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’. The release calendar also now features a notable gap — with no Marvel feature films between ‘The Fantastic 4: First Steps’ on 25 July 2025 and the next Tom Holland-led ‘Spider-Man’ outing on 31 July 2026. It marks the longest drought between MCU cinema entries since the pandemic-induced gap between 2019’s ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ and 2021’s ‘Black Widow’.
Although a number of previously announced projects — including ‘Blade’ and ‘Armor Wars’ — remain in development, none currently has an official release date. However, Marvel has reserved three placeholders for 2028: 18 February, 5 May and 10 November.
The slowdown reflects a strategic pivot from Marvel’s top brass. Disney CEO Bob Iger recently acknowledged that the studio had “lost a little focus by making too much” content, referencing the rapid expansion of both films and Disney+ series. “By consolidating a bit and having Marvel focus much more on their films,” he said during an investor call, “we believe that will result in better quality.”
Both ‘Doomsday’ and ‘Secret Wars’ are expected to be among Marvel’s most ambitious projects yet, with a sprawling cast that includes returning MCU stars, characters from ‘Thunderbolts’, the upcoming ‘Fantastic 4’, and legacy actors from Fox’s ‘X-Men’ films. Robert Downey Jr. is set to return as a reimagined Doctor Doom.
‘Doomsday’ began filming recently, with Downey sharing a behind-the-scenes photo from a group outing to see ‘Thunderbolts’ in support of their fellow Marvel cast.
Marvel revealed part of the ensemble cast during a livestream in March, although notable names such as Tom Holland and Chris Evans were absent. Evans is still expected to appear in at least one of the two films. Taking over the 1 May 2026 slot originally reserved for ‘Doomsday’ is 20th Century’s sequel ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’.
Marvel is clearly hoping the December release window pays off again — the same month ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ debuted in 2021, pulling in $1.9 billion worldwide. With high stakes, a sprawling cast, the growing disinterest in the MCU and Disney’s desperate efforts to bring back fan enthusiasm, Marvel appears to be taking the cautious approach this time. After a few recent misfires and growing calls for quality over quantity, the studio is banking on a longer runway to ensure its next era of storytelling truly sticks the landing.
