SFI, CJP announce daily marches to Jantar Mantar, nationwide protests from Sunday

New Delhi, Oct 10 (UNI) The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and other student organisations on Saturday announced daily marches to Jantar Mantar and a nationwide expansion of student protests against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, demanding his removal over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The announcement was made at a press conference at HKS Surjeet Bhawan following a day of protests in the national capital, during which several demonstrators were detained by Delhi Police.
CJP leader Ajinkya Shinde said the organisations would organise marches to Jantar Mantar every day until Kumar was removed from the post of Chief Election Commissioner. He also alleged that Delhi Police had subjected Abhijeet Dipke and other protesters to inhumane treatment during detention.
SFI general secretary Srijan Bhattacharyya called for the broadest possible unity against what he described as a "dictatorial regime" and announced that student protests would spread to different parts of the country from Sunday.
He said students would hold peaceful demonstrations across the country and continue their protests wherever police barricades prevented them from proceeding.
“Wherever we are stopped by police barricades, that area will become a Jantar Mantar,” Bhattacharyya said, outlining the proposed course of the movement.
Representatives of other student and youth organisations, including the All India Students’ Federation (AISF) and the All India Youth Federation (AIYF), also attended the press conference and extended support to the protest movement.
The gathering also saw participation from members of the intellectual and cultural community. Actor Sudhanva Deshpande, historian Sohail Hashmi and professor Nandita Narain were among those who expressed support for the student-led agitation.
The latest announcement follows Saturday’s protests in Delhi against Kumar over the SIR exercise, which prompted a major police deployment and the detention of several political leaders, students and activists as they attempted to reach Jantar Mantar.
The protesting organisations have maintained that their agitation will continue until their demand for the CEC’s removal is met.UNI PWS AAB
