Mein highlights Arunachal’s hydropower potential at Viksit Bharat conference

Itanagar, Sep 19 (UNI) Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein on Saturday highlighted the State’s vast hydropower potential and its strategic role in India’s clean energy transition at the two-day conference on ‘Financing India’s Journey Towards a Viksit Bharat’.
Participating in the session on ‘Financing the Energy Transition’, organised by the Ministry of Finance at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, Mein said hydropower is critical to India’s clean energy goals as a stable and dependable renewable energy source that can complement solar and wind power.
He said the responsible development of Arunachal Pradesh’s hydropower resources is not merely a State priority but also a national strategic opportunity. Arunachal Pradesh has an assessed hydropower potential of nearly 58,000 MW, accounting for around 40 per cent of India’s total hydropower potential. The State has set a target of harnessing 40 GW of hydropower capacity by 2047.
Highlighting the sector’s progress, Mein said the State’s installed hydropower capacity has increased from 405 MW in 2016 to around 1,200 MW, and has further risen to 2,270 MW following the recent commissioning of the Subansiri Lower Project.
He outlined the State’s ‘Decade of Hydropower 2025–35’ vision, which envisages commissioning 19 GW of new hydropower capacity with an estimated investment pipeline of around Rs 1.9 lakh crore. About 19,000 MW is currently at various stages of development, including 4,880 MW under construction, he said.
The hydropower sector is expected to generate more than 30,000 direct and 16,000 indirect employment opportunities, Mein added.
Emphasising that power generation and transmission must progress simultaneously, Mein called for integrated planning of hydropower projects with high-capacity transmission systems and renewable energy aggregation infrastructure. This, he said, would ensure timely and efficient evacuation of power to the State grid and interstate network.
He also stressed the need for greater private sector participation in developing the State’s remaining hydropower potential and sought continued support from the Centre through appropriate incentives and facilitation mechanisms.
Mein said responsible hydropower development, backed by strong transmission infrastructure and increased investment, could enable Arunachal Pradesh to contribute significantly to India’s clean energy transition while creating opportunities for employment, entrepreneurship and inclusive economic growth.
