Mild 3.5-magnitude earthquake jolts Vijayapura

Vijayapura, Sep 30 (UNI) A mild earthquake measuring 3.5 on the Richter scale struck parts of Vijayapura district in the early hours of Wednesday, sending tremors across areas within a 50 to 60-km radius of the epicentre, the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) said.
The earthquake occurred at 0204 hours at a depth of 10 km, with the epicentre located at 16.604 degrees north latitude and 75.990 degrees east longitude.
According to the KSNDMC, the epicentre was located about 3.9 km northeast of Basavanagudi, 7.8 km west of Hunashyala Gram Panchayat and 11.2 km west of Huvana Hipparagi Gram Panchayat.
The seismic event was also recorded about 31 km northeast of Almatti Dam and 38 km southwest of Vijayapura city.
Though the tremors were felt across a considerable area, the earthquake was of low intensity and there were no immediate reports of damage or threat to the local community.
The KSNDMC said the low magnitude and intensity of the quake did not warrant panic among residents.
"As the intensity of the earthquake is low, there is no harm to the local community, however, tremors may be felt locally. There is no need for the public to panic as both the observed intensity and magnitude are low," it said.
The latest earthquake adds to the instances of low-intensity seismic activity reported in and around the Vijayapura region.
The agency continues to monitor seismic activity in the area and has urged people to remain calm while following official advisories.
