Mild earthquake of 2.6 magnitude hits Nagpur district on Diwali; epicentre near Umred

Nagpur, Nov 8 (UNI) Mild tremors were recorded in Nagpur district on Sunday afternoon, triggering concern among residents on Diwali. The quake, measuring 2.6 on the Richter scale, was recorded at 2.17 pm, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS).
The tremors originated at a depth of five kilometres below the Earth's surface, with its epicentre located around 27 km south-southeast of Nagpur city, in the Umred region.
The NCS confirmed the seismic event as reviewed, recording its coordinates at 20.932° N latitude and 79.214° E longitude.
The latest tremor comes barely days after two earthquakes measuring 2.3 and 3.0 magnitude were recorded near Haldgaon and Dawha villages in Umred taluka on October 27.
Nagpur falls under Seismic Zone II, classified as a relatively low-risk earthquake zone. However, the recurring tremors in and around the district have raised concerns over seismic activity in the region, prompting calls for closer scientific monitoring and detailed geological investigations.
No major damage or casualties were reported following Sunday's earthquake.
The repeated seismic activity has highlighted the need for continuous monitoring and greater public awareness about earthquake safety in Nagpur and neighbouring areas.
