Mirwaiz appeals for public support to MMU’s social reform initiative

Srinagar, Sep 18 (UNI) Kashmir’s chief cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Friday appealed to people to support and actively participate in the social reform initiatives recently adopted by the Mutahida Majlis-e-Ulema (MMU) Jammu and Kashmir, saying meaningful change requires collective participation by society.
Addressing the Friday congregation at the historic Jamia Masjid Srinagar, Mirwaiz said scholars from different regions and schools of thought had deliberated at a recent Ulema conference on pressing social concerns, including drug addiction, suicides and emotional distress among youth, misuse of social media, weakening family bonds, environmental degradation and the need to strengthen communal harmony.
He said conferences and resolutions alone could not bring about change unless people themselves became part of the effort. The objective of the initiative, he said, was to translate concern and discussion into practical action within families, mosques, neighbourhoods and communities.
Mirwaiz said reform had to begin from within and society could not always wait for others to act.
“Collectively, we have to think, reflect and act. Ulema, parents, youth, mosques, madrasas and the wider community, especially parents, have a role to play,” he said, stressing that social reform must be treated as a shared responsibility.
Mirwaiz said common social issues would be taken up in Friday sermons across participating mosques to maintain sustained attention on matters affecting society.
He urged people to support the initiative and carry the discussions into their homes and communities.
Mirwaiz further apprised the congregation of his recent meetings with Iranian President Dr Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, saying he had conveyed solidarity with the people of Iran and discussed the historical, cultural and religious ties between Kashmir and Iran.
He said the Iranian leadership had expressed interest in visiting Kashmir and that he had extended an invitation to them to visit the Valley.
Special prayers were also held at Jamia Masjid for peace and an end to the suffering and loss of innocent lives in Iran, Palestine, Lebanon, Yemen, Ukraine and other conflict-affected parts of the world. The congregation prayed for mercy, peace, justice and relief for those affected by war and devastation.
