Mizoram CM Lalduhoma visits flood-ravaged Serchhip, assures swift relief & rehabilitation

Aizawl, June 5 (UNI) Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma on Thursday toured his home district Serchhip to assess the extensive damage caused by relentless monsoon rains that triggered landslides, floods and mudslides across the central part of the state.
Accompanied by district officials and local leaders, Lalduhoma visited Serchhip town, the district headquarters, and also made stops at Thenzawl, Buangpui, and Neihloh villages. During his visit,
he interacted with residents displaced by the calamity and assured them that both the state and central governments would be fully engaged in ensuring timely relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction.
"The government will not leave you behind in this crisis. We will do everything within our power to support and rebuild your lives,” the Chief Minister told victims, many of whom have been forced to relocate due to damage to homes or threats posed by unstable terrain.
As per a detailed report presented by Serchhip Deputy Commissioner Paul L. Khuma, a total of 25 homes have been completely destroyed, while 19 houses were badly damaged and 18 more partially affected. A total of 108 families have so far been shifted to safer locations, most of them due to massive landslides and flooding.
Landslides or mudslides have been reported in at least 150 locations across the district. Infrastructural damage has also been severe, with 5 bridges, 2 public water tanks, and 18 traditional water sources being washed away. Retaining walls collapsed in 20 different sites, increasing the risk of further landslides in vulnerable areas.
In addition to the damage to property and infrastructure, agriculture has taken a heavy hit. Large tracts of paddy and vegetable fields located in low-lying zones and along the Mat River have been submerged, severely affecting local farmers and threatening food security in the region.
The Chief Minister’s visit comes amid a statewide response to the effects of heavy monsoon rains that have wreaked havoc across Mizoram in recent days, triggering landslides and flooding in multiple districts.
Authorities have launched damage assessment and relief efforts across affected areas, and the state government is expected to submit a comprehensive report to the Centre soon to seek financial assistance under disaster relief provisions.
