Mizoram mulling seizing Myanmar IDs of cross-border refugees: CM tells MEA official

Aizawl, June 26 (UNI) Mizoram is considering confiscating identity cards issued by Myanmar to those refugees who frequently cross the international border after seeking shelter in the state, Chief Minister Lalduhoma informed a visiting Union External Affairs Ministry official today.
During a meeting with Surinder Bhagat, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs and the Protector General of Emigrants, Lalduhoma said the government is concerned about a section of refugees from Myanmar who repeatedly return to their country only to re-enter Mizoram, often defying local laws in the process.
“While many refugees are law-abiding, some violate the norms. The government is considering seizing their Myanmar-issued identity cards when they enter Mizoram again,” the Chief Minister said.
He also briefed Bhagat on the state’s plan to initiate biometric registration of all Myanmar refugees staying in Mizoram as part of enhanced monitoring and regulation efforts.
The Chief Minister further raised the issue of illegal overseas recruitment, stressing the urgency of obtaining prosecution sanction from the Protector General’s office against fraudulent placement agencies. Lalduhoma said that several such licences had already been revoked by the state government.
Bhagat, who also serves as the Protector General of Emigrants, acknowledged the ongoing problem of fake recruitment agents sending Indian nationals abroad under false pretences and later exploiting them.
He urged young job-seekers to exercise caution while seeking overseas employment and indicated that the Centre is likely to roll out an official recruitment initiative to facilitate employment opportunities for Indian youths in Taiwan.
Lalduhoma also flagged the plight of two Mizo students — a boy and a girl — currently studying medicine in China, who are reportedly facing severe difficulties.
Following the meeting with the Chief Minister, Bhagat held detailed discussions with Vanlaldina Fanai, Secretary to the Chief Minister, and other officials of the Mizo Diaspora Cell to review cooperation and coordination between the state and the Ministry of External Affairs. UNI ZS SSP
