MoD clears land for Zirakpur-Panchkula bypass

Chandigarh, May 19 (UNI) In a major boost to infrastructure development in the Chandigarh tricity region, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has granted working permission to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for the use of 2.7461 acres of defence land at Chandimandir Military Station for the construction of the Rs 1,983-crore Zirakpur-Panchkula bypass and its connecting spur road.
The approval removes the final key administrative hurdle delaying the start of ground-level work on the ambitious highway project aimed at reducing traffic congestion in Zirakpur and improving connectivity between Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh.
According to the official order issued with the concurrence of the Ministry of Defence (Finance), the defence land has been valued at Rs 9.88 crore. Instead of direct payment, the compensation will be provided under the Equivalent Value Infrastructure (EVI) model. Under the arrangement, NHAI will construct 32 married accommodation units for Junior Commissioned Officers (JCOs) and Other Ranks (OR) at Chandimandir Military Station at an estimated cost of around Rs 12 crore, while the remaining Rs 2.21 crore will be adjusted through the Army’s defence budget.
