Modi's foreign policy under US influence: Prakash Ambedkar

Nagpur, Sep 22 (UNI) Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) president Prakash Ambedkar today criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi's foreign policy, alleging that India had compromised its strategic autonomy under pressure from the United States.
Addressing a press conference here, Ambedkar referred to the possibility of the United States imposing tariffs on countries purchasing oil from Russia and Iran and said India should firmly safeguard its national interests.
He argued that New Delhi should prioritise affordable energy supplies rather than succumb to external pressure.
Ambedkar said that if he were in the Prime Minister's position, he would have conveyed to US President Donald Trump that India is a sovereign nation and would take decisions based on its own interests.
He contended that reducing purchases of cheaper crude oil from Iran and Russia had adversely affected the country's economic interests.
The VBA leader also sought clarification from the Centre on the benefits India had derived from recent BRICS engagements and expressed concern over China's claims relating to Arunachal Pradesh.
He further alleged that opposition parties across the country had failed to effectively challenge the ruling establishment on key national issues.
Ambedkar also criticised the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the parental organisation of right-wing Sangh parivar (family), claiming that some of its ideological positions were rooted in outdated thinking and were inconsistent with democratic values.
He also announced a march in Mumbai on October 1 to express solidarity with Iran and urged people across Maharashtra to participate in large numbers.
He said the march would begin at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and was aimed at conveying support for Iran amid the ongoing conflict in the Gulf region.
He alleged that the opposition in the country had failed to raise global and regional issues effectively and was deliberately ignoring developments with far-reaching consequences for India.
Referring to the conflict involving Iran, Ambedkar said rising tensions in the region had already pushed up crude oil prices and warned that a prolonged war could have a severe impact on India's economy and household budgets.
He stressed the need for efforts to ensure crude oil remains available at affordable rates.
Ambedkar further criticised the Centre's foreign policy approach towards Israel and claimed that Iran had consistently stood by India during times of crisis.
He said India should support Iran in view of the long-standing relationship between the two countries.
Stressing the importance of national unity, he said religion could provide personal satisfaction but safeguarding the nation's sovereignty required people to remain united.

Protesters detained outside IIT Bombay over student suicide

Mumbai, Sept 22 (UNI) Police on Tuesday detained dozens of activists belonging to the RPI A and Bharat Mukti Morcha after they staged a protest outside the main gate of IIT Bombay over the alleged death by suicide of 22-year-old student Sahil Wakode, an official said. This was the second day of protests with Youth Congress activists staging a demonstration near the campus gate on Monday.
