Mohandas Pai slams Karnataka CM over freebies

Bengaluru, June 24 (UNI) Prominent entrepreneur and former Infosys CFO T.V. Mohandas Pai on Monday expressed deep concern over the state of Karnataka’s economy, alleging that the Congress-led government’s focus on welfare guarantees has crippled development and job creation.
Taking to social media, Pai said, “Very sad to see the disastrous impact of freebies by our CM of Karnataka Siddaramaiah. Even the Home Minister says so — no money for development, investments, or job creation.”
He pointed out that three state budgets have already been presented under the current Congress regime, yet there is no visible allocation for long-term growth or infrastructure. “Three budgets are over, no money for development. Two more to go. So by five years what development will Karnataka see? What about jobs?” he questioned.
Pai’s remarks come amid growing criticism from industry leaders and opposition parties that the state’s finances are under strain due to the implementation of five major poll guarantees promised by the Congress, including free electricity, cash transfers, and subsidised bus travel.
The state government, however, has repeatedly defended the guarantees, arguing that they are essential for social equity and grassroots empowerment.
Pai’s comments have intensified the ongoing debate around the sustainability of welfare-driven governance, especially when weighed against the state’s long-term economic and employment priorities.
