Aizawl, June 8 (UNI) Mizoram continues to grapple with the widespread impact of monsoon-induced disasters, with at least 771 instances of landslides, mudslides, and landslips recorded across the state since May 24, according to an update from the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC).
While the intensity of rainfall has reduced in some regions, isolated areas continue to report fresh destruction.
The latest data released by the Disaster Management & Rehabilitation Department revealed that no fewer than 272 buildings have been either damaged or destroyed due to the persistent heavy downpour over the last two weeks.
A total of 452 families have so far been displaced from their homes—338 due to massive landslides and mudslides, and 114 following floodwaters inundating their residences. The flooding has been most severe in low-lying areas near rivers such as the Tlawng, Khawthlangtuipui (Karnaphuli), Chhimtuipui (Kaladan), and various smaller streams.
The torrential rains have severely disrupted transportation, with landslides and rockfalls blocking roads at 321 locations statewide. These blockages have caused significant delays for commuters, with many stranded for hours, and in some cases, for days.
Damage to infrastructure has also been extensive. Reports indicate the collapse of stone retaining walls in 61 places and rockfalls at 11 sites. Tree and electric pole uprootings have been reported in eight and ten locations, respectively. Ten incidents of ground sinking have also been registered, most of them within Aizawl city. Notably, three cemeteries in the capital were affected by major landslides, exposing and displacing several graves.
The SEOC report further highlighted the occurrence of five flash flood events—locally referred to as ‘Saberekakhuangkaih’, a common hazard in Mizoram due to its steep terrain and intense rainfall.
The recent spell of extreme weather has claimed five lives. On May 30, a man was killed at Thuampui in Aizawl when a retaining wall collapsed onto a temporary shelter. The following day, a Myanmar refugee family of three perished in a landslide at Vapar village in Champhai district. Another fatality was reported in Serchhip town on May 31 when a house collapsed, killing a man staying at his sister’s residence.
Despite heavy showers in Aizawl and some other parts of the state on Sunday morning, there were no fresh reports of damage till the filing of this report.
