More scripts history with U-23 World Wrestling c’ships silver

New Delhi, Oct 15 (UNI) Vishvajit More scripted history by becoming the first Indian Greco-Roman wrestler to reach the final of the Under-23 World Wrestling Championships, claiming silver in the men’s 55kg category after a narrow 12-13 defeat to Georgia’s Koba Karumidze in a thrilling title clash.
A two-time bronze medallist at the championships, More added a silver to his collection to become the only Indian Greco-Roman wrestler to have won two medals at the tournament.
More began his campaign with a hard-fought 10-8 victory over Mexico’s Isaac Marin Mata before taking on Iran’s Armin Shamsipour, the reigning U20 world champion, in the quarterfinals. Shamsipour suffered a shoulder injury after More landed a four-point throw and eventually went down 1-8.
The Indian then produced another impressive performance in the semifinals, defeating Russia’s Malik Gigiev 6-4 to book his place in the final.
In women’s wrestling, Vaishnavi Patil (65kg) and Amruta Pujari (72kg) advanced to the semifinals after winning their respective bouts. Both will compete for a place in the final on the following day.
India also remained in contention for another medal through K. Komal, who qualified for the bronze medal bout in the 59kg category.
However, Mansi Lather’s campaign in the 68kg division ended in the quarterfinals after she suffered a narrow 9-10 defeat to Laura Godino.
