PM Modi meets Asian Games contingent after India’s 85-medal campaign

New Delhi, Oct 15 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday interacted with India’s Asian Games 2026 contingent at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium here, with athletes from various disciplines presenting him with mementoes celebrating their achievements at the Aichi-Nagoya Games.

The interaction was attended by athletes, coaches, support staff and officials from the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), national sports federations and the Sports Ministry.
India finished fourth at the continental Games with 85 medals.

“You have made 140 crore Indians proud. The biggest success is to make the Tri-colour fly high. That's why your success is not just yours but it belongs to crores of our countrymen. I congratulate you on behalf of the entire country,” the PM said in his address to the medal winners.

“India is emerging in establishing itself as a credible and hospitable country for international sports events. We are bidding for 2036 Olympics and it is our resolve that we will host the games,” he asserted.

Wushu exponent Naorem Roshibina Devi of Manipur, who won silver in the women’s 60kg category, presented Modi with a traditional Manipuri Lengyan, a handwoven loincloth
featuring the Sangai deer.

Golfer Pranavi Urs, who made history by winning India’s first women’s individual golf gold at the Asian Games, gifted the Prime Minister her glove and a golf ball.

Recurve archer Kumkum Mohod presented a wooden bow decorated with shells and other embellishments. She was one of India’s standout performers in archery, winning two gold
medals and a silver at the Games.

PM Modi. His achievement marked India’s first-ever Asian Games medal in soft tennis.

The Indian women’s cricket team presented the Prime Minister with a signed Team India jersey, while the women’s hockey team gifted him a hockey stick and an orange jersey signed by all its players. The cricket team successfully defended its Asian Games title, while the hockey team won gold for the first time since 1982.

“I especially want to congratulate our women athletes, they contributed 38 medals to our tally and
11 of those medals were gold," Modi said lauding the cricket teams, the hockey teams and the performance of archers, who won five gold medals.

“The women's hockey team ended a 44-year wait with its gold medal, it is highly appreciable,” he added.

India finished the Aichi-Nagoya Games with 21 gold, 27 silver and 37 bronze medals, placing fourth in the overall standings behind China, Japan and South Korea. The 85-medal haul was India’s second-highest at the Asian Games, behind the record 106 medals won at Hangzhou in 2023.
