Moscow hit by ‘largest-ever’ drone attack as Russia’s Parliamentary election enters final day

Moscow, Sep 20 (UNI) Ukraine carried one of the "largest ever” attack on the Russian capital and the surrounding area on Sunday with more than 1,000 drones reportedly launched as Russia entered the final day of its parliamentary elections.
Russian authorities said the strikes killed at least two people and damaged an oil refinery, while Moscow’s mayor accused Ukraine of trying to disrupt the vote.Russia and Ukraine continued to exchange strikes over the weekend, including attacks on energy infrastructure.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin described the Ukrainian drone attack on the capital and surrounding region as “unprecedented”, saying Russian air defences had intercepted more than 1,600 drones since Saturday, including around 450 heading towards Moscow.
Mayor Sergei Sobyanin linked the attack to the vote but added that the attempt had failed.
"It was clearly planned with the aim of disrupting the elections. The enemy did not succeed,” he said.
Several drones reached the grounds of an oil refinery, while another struck a residential building, Sobyanin said.
In the wider Moscow region, Governor Andrei Vorobyov reported that two people were killed and six others were injured. Several homes were damaged, fires were reported at residential properties, and hundreds of residents were evacuated from a high-rise building.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky praised the long-range strikes but did not directly link them to the elections. He said the attacks had caused significant damage in the Moscow region and targeted facilities that generate revenue used to support Russia’s war effort.
Ukraine’s General Staff said the main target was the Gazprom Neft Moscow Oil Refinery in the Kapotnya district, one of Russia’s largest refineries by production volume. Russia’s Defence Ministry said it had intercepted and destroyed 1,110 Ukrainian drones and other unmanned aerial vehicles overnight.
The attacks came as Russia’s parliamentary election entered its third and final day on Sunday, with voters casting ballots in the first State Duma election since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
President Vladimir Putin has framed the vote as a test of public support for the government’s policies and its war in Ukraine. With no credible opposition, the ruling United Russia party is widely expected to retain its dominant position in the State Duma.
Voting is also taking place in four Ukrainian regions that Russia claims to have annexed, although Moscow does not fully control those territories.
Meanwhile, Russia continued its aerial attacks on Ukraine. Ukrainian officials reported overnight casualties, including children, in the Kyiv region. Zelensky said Russia had launched more than 2,000 attack drones, 1,700 aerial bombs and 19 missiles against Ukraine during the week.
The latest attacks come despite US President Donald Trump saying earlier in the week that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to stop targeting each other’s energy infrastructure.
Trump signed a sanctions bill on Friday that targets Russia's economy by implementing tariffs on the biggest buyers of the country's oil and gas.The measure gives the US president the authority to impose tariffs of up to 100% on major purchasers of Russian oil and gas, including countries such as China and India.UNI AAB
