Most rivers still above danger mark despite signs of improvement

Patna, Sep 16 (UNI) The flood situation in Bihar showed signs of improvement on Wednesday, with water levels receding at most locations, although several major rivers continued to flow above the danger mark at various gauge sites.
According to a report issued by the Water Resources Department, the Ganga, Gandak, Kosi, Bagmati, Burhi Gandak and Punpun rivers remained above the danger level at several locations.
However, a falling trend in water levels was recorded at most sites.
The Gandak was flowing 0.20 metres above the danger mark at Dumariaghat, where the water level was rising.
The Kosi was 1.22 metres above the danger mark at Baltara and 1.15 metres above at Kursela, although water levels were receding at both locations.
The Bagmati was flowing 0.10 metres above the danger mark at Sonakhan, where the level was rising, while at Benibad it was 0.07 metre above the mark and receding.
The Burhi Gandak was 1.15 metres above the danger mark at Khagaria.
The Ganga was flowing 0.66 metres above the danger mark at Gandhi Ghat, 0.76 metre above at Hathidah, 0.30 metre above at Bhagalpur and 1.19 metres above at Kahalgaon. Water levels were receding at all four locations.
The Punpun was 0.27 metres above the danger mark at Sripalpur, with the water level also showing a declining trend.
Discharge from major barrages also declined. According to the report, 1.55 lakh cusecs of water was released into the Kosi from the Birpur barrage, 77,600 cusecs into the Gandak from the Valmikinagar barrage and 72,273 cusecs into the Sone from the Indrapuri barrage.
Discharge from all three barrages was lower than the previous day.
Despite the decline in water levels, the threat has not completely receded in low-lying areas and around embankments.
Authorities have been directed to maintain close surveillance of vulnerable embankments and erosion-prone areas, shift affected people to safer locations and ensure the availability of food, drinking water, medicines and other essential supplies at relief camps.
People have been advised to stay away from fast-flowing water, damaged roads and submerged electrical wires and to immediately inform the local administration in case of an emergency.
The state government has deployed SDRF and NDRF teams for relief and rescue operations, while the process of providing financial assistance to flood-affected families is underway.
Central and state government agencies are also assessing the damage caused by the floods and working to expedite relief and rehabilitation measures.
The department said continuous monitoring of river levels and barrage discharges, along with the safety of embankments, would remain a top priority. UNI RS SAS
