MRPL blast kills contract worker, injures nine in Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Sept 30 (UNI) A blast at the Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL) premises near Jokatte left one person dead and nine others injured on Wednesday, even as authorities brought the situation under control and began assessing the cause of the incident.
The deceased was identified as Manish Karkara, around 30, a resident of Mulki and a contract worker at MRPL, who had been reported missing following the fire. His body was later found in a charred condition, authorities said.
Karnataka Legislative Assembly Speaker UT Khader said the situation had been brought under control and called for a clear report to establish the cause of the blast.
Khader said preliminary information indicated that the blast had occurred in a unit involving a boiler or pressure system, but the exact point and cause of the explosion had not yet been established.
"A clear report on what happened and why it happened is necessary before drawing any conclusion," he said.
The casualty toll stood at one death, with one person suffering burn injuries and being treated in an ICU, while eight others sustained minor injuries and were undergoing treatment.
The blast was followed by thick smoke rising from the MRPL premises, and the sound was heard across several parts of Mangaluru, triggering concern among residents in areas surrounding the refinery.
Khader said the district administration had been instructed to ascertain the circumstances leading to the incident and ensure that all necessary safety-related aspects were examined.
He said the district administration and police were monitoring the situation and collecting details regarding the injured.
Khader also said the incident should be treated as a warning and directed the authorities to examine whether all prescribed safety measures were functioning properly at the facility.
The blast at the major petroleum refinery and petrochemical complex near Jokatte caused anxiety among nearby residents, with dense smoke visible from a distance.
While the situation was brought under control, authorities were assessing the precise cause of the blast and whether any technical or safety-related issue had contributed to the incident.
Further details are awaited as officials continue their assessment.
