MRPL blast under control, cause yet to be established: Speaker UT Khader

Mangaluru, Sept 30 (UNI) The absence of immediate clarity over the source of a blast at the Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL) premises near Jokatte left residents on alert on Wednesday, even as Karnataka Legislative Assembly Speaker UT Khader said the situation had been brought under control and called for a clear report to establish the cause.
Khader said preliminary information indicated that the blast had occurred in a unit involving a boiler or pressure system, but the exact point and cause of the explosion had not yet been established.
"The situation is under control and there is no report of any loss of life so far. A clear report on what happened and why it happened is necessary before drawing any conclusion," he said.
The blast was followed by thick smoke rising from the MRPL premises and the sound was heard across several parts of Mangaluru, triggering concern among residents in areas surrounding the refinery.
Khader said around eight to nine people had suffered injuries in the incident, mostly minor, while some were undergoing treatment at hospitals in Mangaluru.
One person had suffered burn injuries and was being treated in an ICU, he said.
The Speaker said the district administration had been instructed to ascertain the circumstances leading to the incident and ensure that all necessary safety-related aspects were examined.
He said the district administration and police were monitoring the situation and collecting details regarding the injured.
Khader also said the incident should be treated as a warning and directed the authorities to examine whether all prescribed safety measures were functioning properly at the facility.
The blast at the major petroleum refinery and petrochemical complex near Jokatte had initially caused uncertainty among nearby residents, with dense smoke visible from a distance.
While the situation was brought under control, authorities were yet to establish the precise cause of the blast and determine whether any technical or safety-related issue had contributed to the incident.
Further details are awaited as officials assess the incident and prepare a report on its circumstances.
