MRPL fire: One killed, nine injured after high-pressure separator ruptures

Mangaluru, Sept 30 (UNI) A fire following the rupture of a high-pressure Cold Separator in the Coker Hydrotreater Unit at the Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL) premises near Jokatte claimed one life and left nine others injured on Wednesday, with the blaze completely extinguished by 1447 hours.
According to an MRPL update, the incident occurred at around 1220 hours when the Cold Separator, operating at high pressure in the Coker Hydrotreater Unit, ruptured, resulting in a fire.
The affected unit was isolated within its battery limits, following which MRPL's emergency response and firefighting teams were deployed to bring the situation under control.
The fire was brought under control and completely extinguished by 1447 hours, the company said.
During subsequent combing and inspection of the affected site following the firefighting operations, one fatality was reported.
The deceased was identified as Manish Karkara, around 30, a resident of Mulki and a contract worker at MRPL, who had been reported missing following the fire. His body was subsequently found in a charred condition.
One person who sustained burn injuries is undergoing treatment at a hospital and is being provided necessary medical care, the company said.
Eight others suffered minor injuries and were undergoing treatment, taking the total number of injured to nine.
Karnataka Legislative Assembly Speaker UT Khader said the situation had been brought under control and called for a clear report to establish the cause of the incident.
Khader said preliminary information indicated that the blast had occurred in a unit involving a boiler or pressure system, but the exact point and cause of the explosion had not yet been established.
"A clear report on what happened and why it happened is necessary before drawing any conclusion," he said.
Khader said the district administration had been instructed to ascertain the circumstances leading to the incident and ensure that all necessary safety-related aspects were examined.
He said the district administration and police were monitoring the situation and collecting details regarding the injured.
Khader also said the incident should be treated as a warning and directed the authorities to examine whether all prescribed safety measures were functioning properly at the facility.
The incident was followed by thick smoke rising from the MRPL premises, while the sound was heard across several parts of Mangaluru, triggering concern among residents in surrounding areas.
MRPL said further information would be shared as and when it becomes available.
