MRPL incident: Blast-like sound, dense smoke trigger alarm in Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Sept 30 (UNI) The absence of immediate clarity over the source of a blast-like sound at the Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL) premises near Jokatte left residents on alert on Wednesday, after dense smoke was seen rising from the facility.
Residents in areas surrounding the refinery reported hearing a loud sound, which they described as resembling an explosion, followed by the emergence of thick smoke from the MRPL premises.
The sound and smoke were visible and audible from a considerable distance, prompting concern among people living in the vicinity of the major industrial complex.
However, there was no immediate official confirmation on whether the sound was caused by an explosion, a technical incident or any other activity within the refinery.
Details regarding possible damage, casualties or the exact location and nature of the incident were not immediately available.
The incident occurred at the MRPL facility near Jokatte, an important industrial area in Mangaluru, and the sudden sound and smoke triggered anxiety among residents in nearby localities.
Officials were assessing the situation at the facility, and further details are awaited regarding the cause of the incident and the extent of its impact.
MRPL operates a major petroleum refinery and petrochemical complex in Mangaluru and is one of the key industrial installations in coastal Karnataka.
