Mumbai Court Sentences Maid, Lover to Life for Killing Elderly Couple in Bandra

Mumbai, Oct 15 (UNI) A sessions court has sentenced a domestic worker and her lover to life imprisonment for murdering an elderly couple and robbing their flat in Bandra West in 2018.
The victims, Nanak Gopaldas Makhijani and his wife, Daya Nanik Makhijani, were found dead in their apartment at Kokil Kunj Cooperative Housing Society on June 21, 2018.
According to the prosecution, neighbours grew concerned after the couple failed to collect the milk and newspapers left outside their flat. A domestic worker employed in the society alerted the watchman and other residents. After repeated attempts to get a response at the door failed, a resident entered the apartment through a kitchen window.
The couple were found dead inside, with Daya's hands tied using an odhani, the other end of which was wrapped around Nanak's neck and face. The bedroom cupboard was open, and clothes and other belongings were strewn around the room. Post-mortem examinations attributed the deaths to smothering and strangulation.
The Khar police registered a case and arrested the accused, Parvati Kishore Khaka, the couple's maid, and her lover, Singhasan Mukut Ekka, from a train in Nagpur. The two were reportedly waiting to travel to their native place in Odisha.
Khaka denied involvement in the crime, claiming she had left the couple's home with their permission after receiving an emergency call about her mother's serious illness. She said she had contacted Ekka to take her home and rejected the allegation that they had stolen the couple's belongings.
Rejecting her defence, the court relied on the prosecution's case and pointed to her conduct following her departure from the apartment. It noted that she had neither informed the watchman nor told other domestic workers about her mother's alleged illness. No medical documents supporting the claim were produced before the court.
The court examined 35 witnesses, most of whom supported the prosecution case while some of them have also pointed to the recovery of the stolen jewllery at the instance of accused persons. While convicting the accused the court observed that if the accused were innocent, they would have informed someone at the building or the watchman before leaving. It held that Khaka's conduct, along with the circumstances established by the prosecution, went against her defence.
The court convicted both accused and sentenced them to life imprisonment.
