Mumbai's seven lakes hold 97.55 pc water stock after monsoon

Mumbai, Sep 17 (UNI) Mumbai’s seven lakes, the main reservoirs supplying drinking water to the city, continued to maintain a strong reserve after the monsoon, with their combined useful water stock at 97.55 per cent as of 0600 hours on Thursday.
According to the latest report of the Hydraulic Engineer's Department at the Bhandup Complex, the seven reservoirs together held 14,11,942 million litres (ML) of useful water against their total useful capacity of 14,47,363 ML.
The reservoirs were therefore short of their full useful capacity by around 35,421 ML.
The current storage, however, is marginally lower than the levels recorded on the corresponding date in the previous two years. On September 17, 2025, the combined stock stood at 14,30,969 ML, or 98.87 per cent, while on the same date in 2024, it was 14,27,607 ML, equivalent to 98.64 per cent.
The current level indicates that the reservoirs have retained a substantial portion of the water accumulated during the southwest monsoon, providing a sizeable reserve for the city beyond the rainy season.The seven lakes comprise Bhatsa, Upper Vaitarna, Middle Vaitarna, Modak Sagar, Tansa, Tulsi and Vihar.
Water stored in thsese reservoirs forms the backbone of Mumbai’s municipal water supply, and their levels are regularly monitored by the civic administration to assess availability during the post-monsoon and summer months.
The water stock generally rises sharply during periods of sustained monsoon rainfall, while withdrawals for daily municipal consumption gradually reduce reservoir levels after the rainy season.
The final storage position at the end of the monsoon is therefore considered an important indicator of the city’s water security for the coming months.
The latest figures also show that Mumbai has entered the post-monsoon period with the reservoirs holding more than 97 per cent of their total useful storage, substantially strengthening the water position compared with periods of deficient rainfall earlier in the season.Civic authorities continue to keep a close watch on inflows, outflows and reservoir levels as the city moves into the drier months, when rainfall-dependent replenishment is limited and the stored water becomes the principal source for meeting daily demand.UNI AAA AAB
