Nana Patekar's death shocks Maharashtra, government announces state honours for actor

Mumbai, Oct 8 (UNI) Veteran actor Nana Patekar, 75, died on Thursday after suffering a cardiac arrest at his residence in Dona Paula, Goa, sending shockwaves through the Marathi and Hindi film industries.
Patekar was found unconscious at his Dona Paula residence and was taken to Manipal Hospital, Goa, at around 4.30 a.m. Doctors attempted continuous cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for about 45 minutes, but he could not be revived, according to Dr Shekhar Salkar, Chief of Oncology at the hospital.
Condolences poured in from political leaders, including Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, union Minister Nitin Gadkari and others.
The Maharashtra government has announced that Patekar will be accorded full state honours during his final rites.
Fadnavis condoled the actor's death and recalled his close association with Patekar, describing him as an actor who was as large-hearted in real life as he was prominent on screen.
In a post on X, Fadnavis said Patekar had made a lasting contribution to Marathi and Hindi cinema through films such as 'Krantiveer' and 'Natsamrat'. He also recalled the actor's frank and fearless personality and said he had witnessed his sensitive side during his tenure as Chief Minister.
The Chief Minister said Patekar had extended his support to the Jalyukt Shivar Abhiyan and, along with actor Makarand Anaspure, founded the NAAM Foundation to help farmers and people affected by drought.
Fadnavis said Patekar actively worked in the fields and remained at the forefront of relief efforts, particularly during drought situations.
Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde also mourned the loss, calling Patekar the pride of Maharashtra and a true 'Natsamrat'. Shinde recalled his personal interactions with the actor during the recent Ganesh festival and their collaborative grassroots work. He said he would strive to fulfil Patekar's final dream of establishing a school for children in Kashmir as a true tribute to the actor.
His son, Malhar Patekar, who was in Pune, left for Goa after receiving the news. Patekar's last public appearance was reportedly at a Samraat Club International function in Dona Paula four days ago.
The final rites are expected to be decided after the arrival of family members in Goa and completion of post-mortem formalities.
Born Vishwanath Patekar on January 1, 1951, in Murud-Janjira, Maharashtra, he made his acting debut with 'Gaman' in 1978. He went on to establish himself as one of the prominent actors in Marathi and Hindi cinema.
His performances in films including 'Prahaar', 'Parinda', 'Krantiveer', 'Ab Tak Chhappan', 'Welcome' and 'Natsamrat' earned him wide recognition. He won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for 'Parinda' and the National Film Award for Best Actor for 'Krantiveer'. He was also honoured with the Padma Shri in 2013.
