Need to take kirtan tradition to younger generation: Dr Afale

Pune, Sep 16 (UNI) Senior Kirtankar Dr Charudatta Afale was honoured with the 'Kirtan Ratna' award for his contribution to the art of kirtan at a programme held at Patrakar Bhavan here on Wednesday.
Pune Festival president Krishnakumar Goel presented the award to Afale.
The honour included a memento, Puneri turban, shawl, coconut and bouquet. Kirtan exponent Ramchandra Bhide was present as the chief guest.
Pune Festival trustee Mohan Tillu and Nivedita Mehendale were also present.
Speaking after receiving the award, Afale said there was a need to connect the younger generation with the kirtan tradition.
He said kirtankars had plans to introduce kirtan training in schools and colleges and that the art could be used to create awareness on social issues.
Instead of merely discussing Generation Z, there is a need to understand the younger generation and move forward with it, Afale said, adding that channelising the energy of young people in the right direction could lead to constructive work.
Bhide said the Pune Festival's 38-year journey was noteworthy and suggested that promoting kirtan training could pave the way for a three-day kirtan festival in the future.
Goel said kirtan was an effective medium for imparting education and values to society.
He said Pune had a rich spiritual and cultural tradition and stressed the need to preserve it and connect the younger generation with kirtan. UNI SP SAS
