Neral-Matheran toy train service resumes after 4-month Monsoon break

Mumbai, Oct 30 (UNI) The much-loved Neral-Matheran heritage toy train has resumed operations after a four-month monsoon suspension, bringing relief and excitement to tourists and providing a fresh boost to tourism-related businesses in the hill station in Raigad district of Maharashtra.
The service was formally restarted from Neral railway station, marking the end of the seasonal disruption that had kept one of Maharashtra's most popular tourist attractions off the tracks during the rainy months.
The Central Railway had suspended the narrow-gauge service during the monsoon as a precautionary measure in view of the difficult terrain, heavy rainfall and the possibility of landslides along the railway route. The seasonal closure also allows railway authorities to undertake essential track maintenance and safety-related work.
Following the completion of maintenance activities and safety inspections, the railway administration cleared the route for the resumption of train operations.
The Neral-Matheran Light Railway is a historic narrow-gauge railway that connects Neral in Raigad district with the picturesque hill station of Matheran. The approximately 21-km journey passes through forested stretches, winding gradients, tunnels, and scenic mountain terrain, making it a major attraction for visitors.
The train journey is particularly popular among families, children, and tourists seeking to experience the natural beauty of the Western Ghats.
Matheran holds a unique place among Maharashtra's tourist destinations as motor vehicles are prohibited within the hill station, preserving its distinctive environment and making walking, horse riding and the toy train important modes of transport for visitors.
The suspension of the service during the monsoon months had affected tourist movement and business activities to some extent. Hoteliers, local traders, horse operators and other tourism-dependent stakeholders are hopeful that the restoration of the train service will attract more visitors, particularly during the forthcoming festive and winter holiday season.
The reopening is also expected to improve the overall tourist experience by restoring the traditional rail connection to the hill station.
