New Jalpaiguri station revamp delayed, stern action against contractor if deadline missed: DRM

Siliguri, Oct 27 (UNI) The modernisation of New Jalpaiguri (NJP) railway station, scheduled for completion by March 2027, is facing delays, prompting the Katihar divisional railway manager (DRM) to warn that stern action would be taken against the agency as per the terms of the contract if the work failed to meet the deadline.
“We are monitoring the progress of the work. If the contractor fails to complete it within the stipulated period, action will be taken as per the contract,” DRM Kirendra Narah said on Tuesday.
Narah was speaking to reporters after inspecting the ongoing modernisation work at Siliguri Junction station under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.
He said the development work at the station was progressing, with the booking counter, earlier located outside the station, shifted to a new building. The modernisation of Siliguri Junction is targeted for completion by December this year. The upgraded station will have lifts and other passenger amenities.
However, the condition of Siliguri Railway Station, a station of considerable historical importance, remains a concern. Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Rabindranath Tagore and Mahatma Gandhi are among the eminent personalities associated with the region's railway history. Despite repeated discussions and initiatives to improve the station, its importance and infrastructure have gradually declined.
Narah said efforts were being made to resume the development work at Siliguri Town station, which had been temporarily suspended during the Puja period.
He assured that the process would be taken forward soon.
The proposed double-line railway project in Siliguri was another issue discussed during the inspection. According to the DRM, steps were being taken to expedite the project. Form A and Form B have already been submitted, though the process had slowed down during the festive period.
The progress of these projects, particularly the timely completion of the NJP revamp, will be crucial for improving railway infrastructure and passenger facilities in north Bengal.
