Four girls drown in pond during Jitiya festival in East Champaran

Motihari, Oct 2 (UNI) Four girls, including two sisters, drowned while bathing in a pond during the Jitiya festival in East Champaran district today.
According to police, the four girls had gone to a pond near their village, in Ward No. 7 of Inarwabhar panchayat under the jurisdiction of Paharpur police station, to bathe along with several other girls as part of the Jitiya festival.
While bathing, they reportedly entered a deeper section of the pond and fell into a submerged pit.
Another girl who was bathing with them raised an alarm after noticing that they were drowning.
Hearing the cries for help, local residents rushed to the pond and began searching for the girls.
With the assistance of local divers, the four girls were pulled out of the water after nearly half an hour of efforts.
They were immediately taken to the Paharpur Community Health Centre, where doctors declared all four dead.
The deceased have been identified as Sonamati (13) and Phoolmati (10), sisters and daughters of Pramod Mahto; Sonali Kumari (10), daughter of Virendra Mahto; and Pratima Kumari (12), daughter of Achhelal Paswan.
Pramod Mahto, who lost both his daughters in the incident, said the girls had gone to the nearby pond with other children from the neighbourhood. He said they drowned after entering deep water.
The bodies were sent to Motihari for post-mortem examinations.
