Governor calls for citizen participation to build cleaner, sustainable Manipur

Imphal, Oct 2 (UNI) Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla today called for continued public participation and responsible civic practices to build a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable Manipur, stressing that cleanliness should be rooted in the values and teachings of Mahatma Gandhi.
The Governor was speaking at the observance of National Cleanliness Day (Swachh Bharat Diwas) at Gandhi Memorial Hall, Imphal, marking the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
Bhalla led the gathering in paying floral tributes to the statue of Mahatma Gandhi.
Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, ministers, members of the Manipur Legislative Assembly, Chief Secretary, DGP, senior civil and police officials and members of the public also paid homage to the Father of the Nation.
Addressing the gathering, the Governor said the vision of a clean and sustainable Manipur should be guided by Gandhi’s principles of truth, non-violence, simplicity, self-discipline and service.
He said cleanliness, for Gandhi, was not merely a matter of personal hygiene but also reflected inner values, civic responsibility and concern for the welfare of society.
Highlighting progress made under the Swachh Bharat Mission in recent years, Bhalla said collective efforts by communities across the state had contributed to cleaner villages and public spaces.
He called for these efforts to be sustained through greater public participation and responsible practices.
Every citizen, household and community, he said, had an important role in building a cleaner and healthier Manipur while carrying forward Gandhi’s vision of cleanliness and service.
The programme also featured a musical presentation by artistes of Shri Shri Bal Mukunda Dev Government Music College, followed by a choreographic presentation by artistes of the Government Dance College.
The Congress party also observed the day at its office here on Friday.
Congress President Okram Ibobi, MLAs and party workers paid floral tributes to the statue of Mahatma Gandhi on the occasion.
