Odisha launches special anti-drug drive, action initiated against 137 establishments

Bhubaneswar, Oct 7 (UNI) The Odisha government has intensified its crackdown on the illegal sale and misuse of psychotropic medicines, with the Directorate of Drugs Control initiating administrative action against 137 drug establishments for violations during a special anti-drug drive across the state.
The Directorate of Drugs Control under the Health and Family Welfare Department launched the special drive from October 1 to 15 to check the unauthorised sale and distribution of psychotropic medicines and ensure strict compliance with the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, and the rules framed thereunder.
As part of the drive, Assistant Drugs Controllers and Drugs Inspectors, in coordination with police officials, are conducting extensive raids at wholesale and retail drug establishments across the state.
During the inspections, officials are specifically checking whether the purchase and sale of psychotropic medicines, including Alprazolam, Nitrazepam, Pentazocine and Tramadol, are being carried out against valid prescriptions issued by registered medical practitioners.
So far, raids have been conducted at 220 establishments across the state, following which administrative action has been initiated against 137 establishments for violations of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act and related rules.
In a major seizure in Kendrapada district, enforcement officials recovered 1,100 ampoules of Pentazocine injections along with other medicines and medical devices. The seized items were estimated to be worth around Rs 9.70 lakh.
Similarly, medicines valued at around Rs 1.92 lakh were seized from unlicensed establishments in the Astaranga police station area of Puri district, Jonk police station area of Nuapada district and different areas of Deogarh district.
Cases have been registered against the persons involved in the violations, officials said.
The Directorate said the special enforcement drive would continue across the state till October 15 to curb the illegal sale and misuse of psychotropic medicines and ensure compliance with statutory provisions governing the pharmaceutical sector.
