Odisha steps up efforts to strengthen flood management infrastructure

Bhubaneswar, Oct 30 (UNI) In a major push to strengthen flood protection and improve irrigation infrastructure, the Odisha government has decided to accelerate the appraisal and approval of flood management projects while expediting the implementation of key development works across the state.
The renewed focus aims to protect vulnerable and flood-prone areas, strengthen river embankments, improve drainage systems and enhance the efficient utilisation of available water resources.
The decision was taken at the 158th Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) meeting of the State Flood Control Board, held in hybrid mode here on Friday under the chairmanship of Engineer-in-Chief Dillip Kumar Rout.
During the financial year 2026–27, a total of seven Flood TAC meetings have been conducted so far. At the latest meeting, the committee discussed 38 proposals received from various Drainage Divisions across the state. These included 31 flood control projects and seven drainage-related works.
The proposed projects involve an estimated investment of Rs.653.99 crore. Discussions primarily focused on safeguarding vulnerable and flood-prone regions, strengthening existing river embankments and upgrading drainage infrastructure to improve the state's preparedness against flooding.
In a parallel development, the 162nd Technical Advisory Committee meeting on Irrigation Projects was also held in hybrid mode under the chairmanship of the Engineer-in-Chief.
The committee approved 47 proposals covering major in-stream storage structures and associated infrastructure works.
According to official sources, the proposed irrigation projects are expected to improve irrigation efficiency, strengthen the existing water distribution network and ensure more equitable utilisation of water resources across different regions of Odisha.
The government's renewed emphasis on flood management and irrigation infrastructure reflects its focus on addressing flood-related challenges while improving water resource management and supporting agricultural development.
With the appraisal, approval and implementation of these projects being prioritised, the initiatives are expected to contribute to stronger flood protection, improved drainage facilities and a more efficient irrigation network across the state, officials said.
