Assam gas blowout: ONGC, foreign experts progressing despite challenging weather

Guwahati, June 23 (UNI): Despite a heavy rainfall on Monday, ONGC’s Regional Crisis Management Team (RCMT), along with international experts from Cudd Pressure Control, remained fully engaged in plugging the leakage in a well at Barichuk Bhatipara of Assam's Sivsagar district.
The teams continued their efforts and ensured that clearing the remaining rig equipment continued uninterruptedly despite challenging weather conditions.
"The extra-long boom crane, essential for safely removing tubing stacked in the rig derrick, has reached the well site from Guwahati on Monday. Its arrival marks a crucial step forward in clearing the rig from the well for the final capping operation," said a statement issued by the ONGC on Monday.
"A noticeable reduction in gas pressure has been recorded on monday, an important and hopeful sign that paves the way for a safer and more controlled capping process", it said adding that simultaneously mobilisation of additional specialised equipment such as the Athey Wagon, Bulldozer, etc., for the capping operation is progressing steadily.
The ONGC reiterated that it remains fully committed to bringing the situation to a safe and successful resolution. With each milestone, the team moves closer to securing the well, backed by expertise, dedication, and the support of the local administration and community.
The gas blowout at the well at Barichuk Bhatipara started on June 11, forcing the district administration to evacuate over 330 families from neighbouring villages. The Assam government has given immediate benefit of Rs 25000 to each family and made available the relief materials to the affected people. UNI ANP SSP
