Odisha Assembly adjourned till 4 PM amid Opposition uproar over MMDR amendment

Bhubaneswar, Sep 24 (UNI) Proceedings in the Odisha Legislative Assembly were disrupted for the third consecutive day on Thursday as Opposition BJD and Congress members protested against the MMDR Amendment Act, forcing Deputy Speaker Bhabani Shankar Bhoi to adjourn the House till 1600 hours.
As soon as the Assembly assembled at 1030 hours to take up the Question Hour, members of both Opposition parties trooped into the well of the House holding placards and raising slogans demanding scrapping of the MMDR Amendment Act, which they claimed was against the interests of Odisha.
Despite repeated appeals by the Deputy Speaker to cooperate with the proceedings and allow the Question Hour to continue, the protesting members refused to relent and intensified their agitation in the well of the House.
Some Opposition members also climbed onto the reporters' table and raised slogans in support of their demand, creating a noisy scene in the Assembly.
Amid the uproar, Bhoi proceeded with the Question Hour, which continued for about 13 minutes before he adjourned the House at 1043 hours till 1600 hours.
The disruption on Thursday followed two consecutive days of protests in the Assembly. While the BJD had raised the issue of errors in school textbooks and the Congress had protested against the MMDR Amendment Act during the previous two days, both Opposition parties joined hands on Thursday to protest against the MMDR amendment.
For the third consecutive day, the Assembly could not conduct its scheduled Question Hour, Zero Hour and adjournment motion business due to the vociferous protests by the Opposition members.
